July 27., 2014: Update before the 2014/2015 season.

With more pressing work to be done and a general lack of being able to devote time to catch up with all the iOS updates, the Football League Simulator has not been updated for a long time (expect for adding some new leagues for the 2014 season, in particular for Norway and Sweden).

I apologize for the lack of updates, and therefore all supported league tournaments for the 2014/2015 season will be provided for free. You may still support FLS by upgrading to remove ads, by giving us a rating on the App Store, and by showing the app to your friends! Thank you for your support.

Barcelona to win again in 2013/2014?

August 11., 2013: And another season starts...

As version 1.2.11 of the Football League Simulator has been released, the 2013/2014 season is on its way and FLS keeps predicting those winners for several minor and major leagues around the world.

You may have noticed that there are not so many leagues available for free anymore, but there is still some opportunities to get leagues without paying anything. First, everyone gets access to one league tournament of their choice just by starting to use the app. Second, there are certain actions that may give free access to another league. Hint: it has to do with accepting to do an action that will help FLS to climb the ratings on the App Store...

Netherlands

June 12., 2013: Latest news.

Version 1.2.10 of the Football League Simulator is under review for the App Store. It finally includes support for expelled teams, so that the table for the second division of the Netherlands, Eerste divisie, can finally be corrected (apologies to all fans of the Eerste divisie for not handling this sooner).

Since the 2012/2013 season has now ended, it will disappear from the list of active leagues soon. At the same time, work has started on adding leagues for the 2013/2014 season. This will start with the English league system, and then continue with Spanish, Italian, German, and French football. Other countries may then be added to the mix as well.

I intend to announce new additions to the list of active leagues using my Twitter account:

March 9., 2013: Getting out of hibernation.

A long time has passed since the last blog update, for various reasons. However, the Football League Simulator is now up to version 1.2.7, as some critical bugs were fixed some months ago.

In addition, support for some new leagues has been added. For leagues starting their season in the Spring, FLS now supports China, Japan, Norway and Sweden.

At the moment it looks like version 1.2.8 (with only some very minor changes) will be submitted to the App Store quite soon. Several more exciting changes are planned for later versions, but these seem to require more time to complete.

2012

Football League Simulator

December 6., 2012: Winter slow-down.

Development of the Football League Simulator is slowing down for a while, as version 1.2.5 is the last update planned for this year. However, the addition of several new leagues is planned for next year (first some late additions to the 2012/2013 season, and then later the 2013 season will be supported as well).

Meanwhile, enjoy the predictions for the 18 currently available leagues/divisions!

November 28., 2012: What's new?

Version 1.2.4 of the Football League Simulator has been released. It contains some improvements, but unfortunately one of them has been seen not to always work as it should.

To ensure new results are downloaded as soon as possible, new downloads are explicitly not stored in cache. However, when updating from older versions, old downloads may still reside in cache and prevent new results from being downloaded. It seems that clearing the cache manually fixes the problem: Under "Settings", choose "Safari" and find a selection to clear the cache (possibly including cookies and data). Please send an email if the problem persists.

(In addition, version 1.2.5 has been submitted to the App Store with a permanent fix that does not require any user action, but new versions usually take about a week to be approved by Apple.)

Portugal

November 06., 2012: New version and new league.

Version 1.2.2 of the Football League Simulator has just been released on the App Store. Match results are now updated in a much better way!

Support has also been added for the Primeira Liga of Portugal (free of charge).

The next update (version 1.2.3) will be shipped to the App Store very shortly. This will add support for using head-to-head scores to break ties (as in La Liga, Serie B, and a few others). It will also fix the one known bug in version 1.2.2: the app crashes when certain splash ads are dismissed quickly.

October 22., 2012: Finally a blog-post again!

Since last blog-post version 1.2.1 of the app has been released. Not a major update, but one can now send a Tweet with an image of the simulation results.

Finally a draft of a paper discussing some research on the simulation model has been finished. Download here, and feel free to send an email if you have any interesting inputs!

Work has started on the next update of the app as well. The primary focus now is to ensure more steady updates of new match results. As some users have noticed, the time between matches are finished and the results become available in the app varies a lot. Hopefully, with the next update, this time will be reduced to a few minutes only.

V.1.2.0

October 9., 2012: update released.

Version 1.2.0 of the Football League Simulator is now available on the App Store. It includes some useful improvements, so be sure to update right away.

At the same time, several new leagues have become available: 2. Bundesliga, Serie A, Serie B (free), and Ligue 1.

Twitter bird

October 5., 2012: Ligue 2 and Twitter.

The second division of France, Ligue 2, is now available for free. Ligue 1 will become available later, when version 1.2.0 has been released and support for points deducted is ready (Ajaccio has been deducted 2 points).

Find it difficult to check this blog for updates? Perhaps Twitter would be easier?

V.1.2.0

September 28., 2012: News about next update.

Another update of the Football League Simulator (numbered as v.1.2.0) has just been submitted for review. This time there is a mix of new features and some important bug fixes coming up!

One new feature is the support of points deductions. While motivated by recent deductions for Norwegian teams (in both Tippeligaen and Adeccoligaen), this also means that it will be straightforward to add the Italian leagues (both Serie A and Serie B are planned as additions, once version 1.2.0 becomes available).

There are also some important bug fixes. Most importantly, there was a bug that led to matches being duplicated when changing the time zone of the device.

September 20., 2012: Various developments.

A new version of the Football League Simulator (numbered as v.1.1.1) was submitted to Apple a while ago, but only with minor changes.

Preparations to include additional leagues have continued lately, and first out will be some German leagues (Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga).

The Norwegian federation has apparently decided to deduct some points, from teams both in Tippeligaen and Adeccoligaen. The current version of the app does not support this. However, since it was not really an unexpected action, the required extensions are almost in place and should be included in the next version to be submitted to Apple (that is, not in v.1.1.1 but in the following one). A blog post will be made when this happens.

Version 1.1

September 14., 2012: Version 1.1 ready.

Version 1.1 of the Football League Simulator is available for download!

Some additional leagues have been added as well since the last blog update: Championship, League One, League Two, and Primera Divisíon are available as in-app purchases.

Spain

September 11., 2012: While waiting: another free league!

Waiting is boring, so while waiting for the upgrade to version 1.1, why not check out the new free league that has been added to the Football League Simulator? The new league is Segunda División, the second division of Spain: will Elche keep up, or will Villarreal be too strong?

Championship

September 7., 2012: More leagues coming.

The selection of leagues available for the Football League Simulator is still fairly limited. However, there are plans to extend with new leagues gradually. The next league that will be added is the Championship (England, 2012/2013). While this will be available only for a small fee, there are also plans to add additional free leagues later.

Okay, enough blogging for now... back to waiting for the release of version 1.1!

Version 1.1

September 6., 2012: News about first update.

With the Football League Simulator having been available for a whole 24 hours, it is time to mention the first update (which will be available from the App Store soon).

The update to version 1.1 will fix some glitches and improve the user interface. Perhaps most interesting, though, is that it will make some improvements to the simulation routine. The improvement is due to taking into account goal differences, and is mostly noticable near the end of the season.

September 5., 2012: First blog post!

The Football League Simulator has just been released on the App Store! I realize that it would be nice to have somewhere to give feedback to users of the app, and henceforth this blog will attempt to serve that purpose. The plan is to post here about current work to improve the app (in any respect), so if you wish to know what future updates will bring, please check here first!
